For Clinicians
CLINICAL SUPERVISION FOR EATING DISORDERS, EMPLOYEE EXPANSION, HEALTH INSURANCE, AND WORK-LIFE BALANCE
Does this sound familiar to you?
I still remember it to this day, I had started my first position as a private practice RD as part of a group practice. I told the team I was happy to see any client except eating disorders since even as a seasoned RD I had never been provided training in my education except for 1 - one hour class in my undergraduate (and it was the basic definitions of the different eating disorders). Fast forward 3 months into my position a therapist begged me to see a new client with anorexia who needed nutritional support and insurance reimbursement. After several days, I decided I would see this client.
As anyone who knows me will attest, I can get quite fixated on learning all I can about a subject and it was no different as I got this first client. Yes, I took a course. Yes, I read lots of books, but the most important thing I ever did was start getting supervision. I had no idea where to start and my first supervisor was really helpful clinically but I knew it wasn’t what I really needed. I attended a training in New York City and the presenter of the training was amazing and her approach felt “right” to me. She became the most important educator in my career.
I remember the first session I told her I needed to know exactly what to do. I can look back and laugh, but quickly our supervision came about much more. It’s now been over 10 years and I still do my own bi-weekly supervision because I don’t think we should ever be done learning. I also believe supervision helps with us burning out.
For those seeking supervision you might be feeling the same way -or- maybe you want to push yourself to challenge your own beliefs about weight inclusive care.

Business Coaching
Navigating the intricacies of eating disorders requires a comprehensive understanding of nutritional science, psychology, and counseling techniques, but what we don’t talk about is how we don’t have one class or rotation on being a business owner. Who teaches us the intricacies of running a thriving practice? This fear held me back for the first 15 years of my career. What business coaches don’t tell people is the average person fails multiple times at self employment before they find success. It was both humbling and allowed myself to have compassion for myself when I realized I fell into this statistic. Although I stood up my business in 2013, it wasn’t until 2019 I can say I had a clear vision to lead to a successful business.
If you are getting sold, the idea of buying a general program on business coaching is going to help you, be skeptical. If their biggest sales pitch is their own success(especially monetarily), be skeptical. Believe me, I’m speaking from experience as someone that bought into this model and it cost me ALOT of money with no idea where to start after. What I can tell you was most helpful was hands down the 1:1 coaching and mentorship I received. To this day I still say the simplest most important question my coach asked me was, Dana what IS working?
